Why You Should Be Using Multi-Factor Authentication

Why You Should Be Using Multi-Factor Authentication

What is Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA)?

Every time you type in a password to access an account, you’re using one-factor authentication. These days, you’ll need to layer your security better with the help of two-factor or multi-factor authentication.

2FA or MFA will require a source of authentication from a separate system such as your email. If you try signing in with just your password on a new device, then you’ll be sent a verification code on another system that is already trusted.

Alongside the lowered risk of a breach, 2FA or MFA allows you to track the time and place you logged into your account.

What Is The Safest Way To Implement MFA?

SMS or phone-based codes for MFA is not secure enough. Cybercriminals can easily access these codes or they may potentially be the ones sending them to you.

We suggest downloading the Microsoft or Google Authenticator app from an official app store, and always use 2FA or MFA when possible. An authenticator app will create a one-time security code that lasts 30 seconds until it expires so you have an added layer of security that no cybercriminal will be able to act on in time.

By using MFA, you're significantly reducing your risk of a breach.

What Else Can I Do To Reduce My Risk of a Breach?

This is what we refer to as the holy trinity of cybersecurity: MFA + Strong and unique passwords + Cyber Unit protection = reduced risk of a cyber attack

More and more individuals and small businesses are facing cyber threats as they typically don't have top-level security in place. Life is hectic and security is expensive, but it doesn't have to be.

Cyber Unit's mission is to make top-level cyber protection accessible and affordable for everyone! Everyone is a target for cybercrime, so prevention is key!
